Why tap water is not safe to drink?
Tap water is vulnerable to chemical contamination due to three main factors:
- Industrial and Consumer Pollution: Chemical manufacturers, military bases, and consumer waste leach PFAS and other industrial solvents (like TCE) into the soil, eventually reaching groundwater and municipal reservoirs.
- Agricultural Runoff: Rain washes fertilizers, livestock manure, and pesticides from farms directly into the water supply.
- Aging Infrastructure: Once water leaves a treatment plant, it must travel through miles of pipes. In many U.S. cities, these distribution pipes—or the plumbing inside older homes—are made of lead or copper, which can corrode and leach directly into the water right before it exits the faucet.
According to the EPA and major scientific reviews, high levels of PFAS exposure are strongly linked to severe health outcomes:
- Cancer: Increased risk of kidney, testicular, prostate, and thyroid cancers.
- Liver Damage: Accumulation in the liver has been linked to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and elevated liver enzymes.
- Immune System Suppression: Reduced ability of the body to fight infections and a weakened antibody response to vaccines, particularly in children.
- Developmental and Reproductive Harm: Decreased fertility, pregnancy complications (like pre-eclampsia or high blood pressure), low infant birth weight, and accelerated puberty.
- Metabolic Issues: Altered thyroid function, increased cholesterol levels, and a higher risk of childhood obesity.
How Other Waterborne Chemicals Affect Us
Beyond PFAS, city water systems and private wells constantly battle several other hazardous chemicals:
- Lead: A potent neurotoxin that enters water primarily through corroding pipes. The EPA notes that there is no safe level of lead exposure for children. It causes irreversible cognitive deficits, learning disorders, behavioral problems (like ADHD), and decreased academic achievement.
- Nitrates & Nitrites: Stemming from fertilizer and sewage runoff, these chemicals interfere with the blood's ability to carry oxygen. In infants, this can cause a fatal condition known as methemoglobinemia, or "blue baby syndrome."
- Arsenic: Entering water from natural bedrock deposits or industrial runoff, chronic exposure to arsenic is linked to cardiovascular disease, skin lesions, and cancers of the bladder and lungs.
- Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs): To kill bacteria, water treatment plants use disinfectants like chlorine. However, chlorine can react with natural organic matter in the water to form DBPs, which long-term studies have associated with bladder cancer and developmental issues.
